Short Films, Big Impact: How To Make a Microdoc?
Workshop presented by Anuradha Rana, Kitty Hu, Sonia Desai Rayka, Pallavi Somusetty, and Lily Qi
The Asian American Documentary Network (A-Doc) first launched a series of microdocs (2-3 minute short documentaries) when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. It was a way to explore intimate stories that expanded upon or challenged mainstream narratives, and ultimately make sense of the world at that time. As we approached the 2024 elections, these microdocs created an opportunity to uplift local advocacy, intergenerational power, and community-building. With impact front-and-center, hear from the microdocs producing team and one of the filmmakers on how they crafted succinct, yet effective stories to connect with regional partners and civic engagement efforts on the ground. Through a case study and behind-the-scenes anecdotes, this panel explores the filmmaking process, walking through their decision-making, early cuts, revisions, challenges, and factors that shaped the final films.
