Intro to Screenwriting Rooted in Decolonization and Abstract Thinking

Workshop presented by Maria Judice

This workshop invites participants to challenge traditional storytelling by exploring screenwriting through a decolonized and abstract lens. We will deconstruct conventional narrative structures and focus on developing complex, dynamic characters that push the boundaries of cinema, deepening personal and cultural connections. Participants will unlearn Western Three-Act Structure frameworks and draw from their cultural legacies.

Through studying philosophers, revolutionary thinkers, and politically centered master-level screenwriters, we will engage in ancestral ways of being and knowing, non-linear storytelling, visual symbolism, and film grammar. This workshop encourages participants to experiment with form, language, and oral tradition, uncovering untold truths and resisting the imposition of dominant, colonial narratives.
