An Afro-Futurist Audio Film Workshop

presented by Imani Dennison, OlaRonke Akinmowo and Chris Ryan Williams

A still from Bone Black: Midwives vs. the South. It shows a silhouetted woman sitting on a pedestal, there are shadows of people behind her.

This experimental hybrid workshop offers its participants a chance to explore the connections between sound and storytelling by using Octavia Butler’s first short story Speech Sounds as inspiration.

Ahead of the workshop, participants will be provided with both text and audio book to engage with. Participants will be split into two groups: creative writers, and sound artists. After receiving the prompt, we will gather in pairs and present our findings. This collaboration will result in the creation of a living, breathing audio film that encapsulates the diverse interpretations and perspectives of our participants. Our hope is that this inspires participants to explore audio films and bend genres in their own creative practices.

Our workshop is tailored to a broad spectrum of creatives, including cinephiles, audiophiles, writers, storytellers, musicians, and sound designers. By promoting a multi-disciplinary approach, we aim to encourage creative exploration, spark dialogues, and ultimately contribute to a richer tapestry of Black Science Fiction storytelling.
